Adonis

Adonis Adonis is one of the most important poets and intellectuals in the Arab world. His is also one of the most authoritative and respected Arab voices in western culture. Born into a humble family in a village in Syria in 1930, he studied at Damascus University where he graduated in Philosophy. Later he moved to Beirut, where he worked as a teacher and journalist. He lives in Paris. He has written numerous books of poetry and essays, including the recent: La preghiera e la spada (Guanda, 2002); Memoria del vento (Tea, 2002); Cento poesie d’amore (Guanda, 2003); Libro delle metamorfosi e della migrazione nelle regioni del giorno e della notte (Mondadori, 2004); La musica della balena azzurra. La cultura araba, l’Islam, l’Occidente (Guanda, 2005); In onore del chiaro e dello scuro (Archivi del ‘900, 2005) and the recent essay Oceano nero (Guanda, 2006).
