Alfio Quarteroni

Alfio Quarteroni is Professor Emeritus at the Politecnico di Milano and at the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL). In 2022, he was ranked first among mathematicians in Italy and 48th worldwide by the Top Mathematical Scientists index. He is a member of eight international academies, including the Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei and the Academy of Europe. He has received several prestigious awards, including the NASA Award (1992), the Galileo Galilei International Prize for Science (2014), the Euler Medal (2022), the Lagrange Prize (2023), the Blaise Pascal Medal for Mathematics (2024), and the Ritz-Galerkin Prize (2024). He led the mathematical design work for Alinghi, the Swiss yacht that won the Americas Cup in 2003 and 2007, and developed the first complete mathematical model of the human heart.
