Massimiliano Valerii, Luigi Zoja
Italy: splendour and decline, emotions and numbers
In Italy, ingratitude and betrayal, grandeur and pettiness have become foundational, often overshadowing true greatness. This can be seen in the actions of the Risorgimento patriots, who betrayed their sovereigns out of loyalty to the ideal of unity, and in the shifting international alliances during the two World Wars. The character of Italians—the identity of a nation—is built through great narratives, seen as essential frameworks of meaning. While indispensable, these narratives can become traps if they betray the expectations they create. Expertly moving between history and art, economics and politics, customs and mass psychology, Luigi Zoja and Massimiliano Valerii, explorers of the imagination from complementary perspectives, reflect on the epochal shift we are facing and the new spectres that have begun to haunt us.
