2023 Programme
Event #8
Guido Tonelli
Matter. The wonderful illusion
We will journey through the elementary constituents of matter, the ordinary matter that forms rocks and planets, flowers and stars, everything, including us. We will delve into the exotic and mysterious material forms that lurk in the most unexplored corners of the universe. We will discover the characteristics of elementary particles which combine in extravagant forms to form entangled quantum states, primordial soups of quarks and gluons, or massive neutron stars. We will answer questions arising from the most recent research: how can the vacuum be a material state? Why can space-time also vibrate and oscillate? What forms does matter take inside black holes? And we will realise that the idea that matter consists of eternal, unchanging components is nothing more than a wonderful illusion.
