Event #34
Chiara Montanari
Into the wild
What is the role of leadership in extreme conditions? How do you manage the every day life of a team of scientists at -50°C? Starting from her own experience as the leader of a research group in Antarctica, Chiara Montanari explains how, in difficult environments, logistical and health emergencies are only a few of the variables that a leader needs to know how to handle. She also must consider homesickness, the desperate search for a shred of privacy, the individual differences and dynamics of a small community isolated within a desert of ice. In a place where resources are limited and survival depends upon the group, it is the boss’s duty to bridge any differences and to instruct her team on how to manage uncertainty, pay close attention to change, recognize opportunities and place trust in one another.
, engineer, is an expert in innovation management, strategic leadership and team building in extreme environments. She has taken part in four research missions and was the first Italian to lead a mission to Antarctica. Most recently, in 2013, she managed logistics for the Concordia Base camp at 1200 km from the coast and 4000 metres of perceived altitude. She researches strategic development and scientific calculations at Politecnico in Milan. She is also collaborating with Università di Bergamo to study team building and the theory of complexity in managerial environments. In 2015 she published Cronache dai ghiacci. 90 giorni in Antartide (Mondadori Electa).
