Popular revolts in Medieval Europe. The rebellion of the Ciompi (1378)
Florence, the richest city in the world, was ruled by the people. The government was in the hands of the Arts, the guilds of trades that represented the world of work. But in the Arts, entrepreneurs, bankers, industrialists and, at most, shopkeepers counted: certainly not the workers of the textile industry, the ciompi, who worked their clothes at home to create the wealth of the city. Until one day the workers decided that they too should be involved in the government of the city, and occupied the squares, ready to be killed if necessary, in order to make their voices heard.
