Lots Can Still Be Done, This Is Why the Future Is Marvellous

Italy is a Republic founded on its beauty. And yet we don’t know how to describe it. We’re filled with certainty but we lack the courage. Instead, suffering because of our courage is one of the best diseases that can affect us because it’s contagious. Courage, of the healthy, productive kind, must be accompanied by doubt, civic consciousness and responsibility, friendship and the capacity to simplify, goodness, honesty and shrewdness. Courage doesn’t exist without pride, optimism and conscience. The courage to think local and act global, the courage to export our wonderful products and attract tourists to come and see our Italian beauties. As Albert Einstein once said, a crisis can be a real blessing to any person, to any nation. For all crises bring progress and the birth of creativity. So what we need to do now is stop moaning, roll up our sleeves and do that “extra something” that’s missing.

Oscar Farinetti

businessman and lover of wine, born in Alba in 1954, after launching the retail chain Unieuro and working in the electrical appliances and electronics sector, founded Eataly in 2004 and has bought stakes in many quality food and drinks companies. In 2008 he wrote Coccodè, his marketing venture (Giunti, 2009), and his biography, Il mercante di utopie by Anna Sartorio, was published by Sperling & Kupfer. In 2011 he wrote 7 mosse per l’Italia (Giunti), in 2012 the chapter on “Armonia” in Lezioni di cittadinanza (Edizioni Gruppo Abele), and in 2013 Storie di coraggio. 12 incontri con i grandi italiani del vino (English-language edition Vino, I Love You) with Shigeru Hayashi (Mondadori Electa).
