Surviving Middle School
Learning disorders in the school environment are rising steeply. Growth assignments and school assignments often clash, to the extent that becoming a good student can be perceived as being a form of self-betrayal. When a child that age has a disappointing encounter with his or her peers, feelings of shame and estrangement can make the child wish to disappear. The subjects taught can at times bring relief, or else they can further burden an already precarious balance. Mathematics, for instance, with its rules and abstract language, can introduce order and distance in emotional disorder. History with its epic events can accentuate a sense of marginality. From this point of view, acquiring an awareness of what undermines the child’s relationship with study and knowledge can help them to take control of their own growth
