Keeping cool: hibernation and the exotic network of its physiology

Hibernation is a condition characterized by an active reduction in the organism’s metabolism, which allows some mammals to survive when resources are lacking. During hibernation, the network of physiological relationships that normally enables the different systems to work in harmony to keep the organism alive, drastically changes to obey a new paradigm. Understanding this paradigm is one of the greatest challenges faced by modern science. Currently, interest in this field of research is very high: for instance, the European Space Agency (ESA) has formed a work group focusing on the possible applications of this physiology in the field of space exploration and medicine.
