Spiders, silk and spider webs: wonders of the unloved

Spiders aren’t very popular, but for those who can look beyond false myths and superficial fears, these animals hide the ability to charm even their harshest critics. Many tribes from Western Africa identified a plethora of powers in Anansi, the Spider King. Yet even mythology is surpassed by the properties and variety of uses that spiders’ silk is able to offer, so much so that we humans have begun studying it closely. Nothing is impossible to achieve with silk and spider-webs: running, defense, hunting, flight, finding food, moving in three dimensions and even having sex. Just open your mind and let yourself get caught in the web.

Emanuele Biggi

is a naturalist and photographer from Genova. He has conducted the television program Geo with Sveva Sagramola on Rai 3 since 2013. His greatest passion are lesser-known animals, which he tries to get the public to appreciate through articles, conferences and themed exhibitions such as Predators of the Micro-cosmos and Meet Your Neighbours. He has collaborated with publications in the field and his photographs have been awarded or nominated in a variety of competitions (Big Picture Competition, Wildlife Photographer of the Year, BioPhoto Contest, Asferico). He was among the speakers at the international photography symposium Wildphotos in London in 2013 and at the Bristol Wildscreen Festival in 2016.
