Event #35

Lucia Votano

The dark web of the universe

The grand scale structure of the universe is similar to a giant web, connecting clusters of galaxies through string-like structures formed mostly of dark matter. It’s the cosmic web. Much like the deep web – which search engines cannot access – contains the greatest part of the information circulating online, similarly dark matter, invisible and still unknown in nature, is five times more abundant than known matter. Its existence is like an open crack in the Standard Model of elementary particles, which still has triumphed with the discovery of the Higgs boson. Uncovering the nature of dark matter is one of modern physics’ most exciting goals and the hunt is taking place in underground laboratories like Gran Sasso and CERN, with great telescopes and in space.28

Lucia Votano

, a physicist and associate research director at INFN, has conducted research at CERN and DESY-Hamburg and was director of the Underground lab at Gran Sasso, where experiments of global importance are conducted on neutrinos and dark matter. Here she was among the key figures in the discovery of neutrino oscillation with the Opera experiment, which used a neutrino beam fired from CERN in Geneva to Gran Sasso. She is currently taking part in the Juno experiment, an enormous underground apparatus undergoing construction in southern China. She has received a number of prizes and was honored as knight commander by the Italian president of the Republic Giorgio Napolitano for her work in the field of science.

In 2012 her book Il fantasma dell’universo. Che cos’è il neutrino was published by Carocci.
