Event #6

Alessandro Barbero

Clandestine networks. A network of spies: doctor Sorge in Tokyo

For eight years, from 1933 to 1941, a well-known German journalist stationed in Tokyo and enrolled in the Nazi party secretly provided Stalin with vitally important information, such as the date of Hitler’s attack to the Soviet Union. Comprising Japanese reporters and politicians, a Yugoslav journalist and a German expert on cyphers, Richard Sorge’s network had access to the secrets of the German embassy and the Japanese government: no other network of spies provided a greater contribution to the outcome of the Second world war.
