Event #13
Armando Punzo
The secret community
Normally, prison is intended as a reclusive community that is opposed to the free one. Theatre creates a third way, giving life to a free community in jail. By reacting to the rules of an independent artistic language, this community moves beyond the very opposition between open and closed boundaries. At the best of times, theatre workshops in prison are valued in their highly limiting connotation as a tool for reforming inmates. But there is much more. After thirty years of teaching theatre at the Volterra prison with Compagnia della Fortezza, Armando Punzo talks about the everyday practice through which, from his secret outpost within an entirely closed off place, he has created holes in reality, returning the faculty to theatre of transforming space and people, right where least expected.
https://www.festivaldellamente.it/it/live-streaming-alessandro-barbero/Armando Punzo, filmmaker and playwright, has linked his name to Compagnia della Fortezza, a professional theatre company formed by inmates, that he founded in 1989 and still directs at the Volterra prison. Compagnia della Fortezza is characterized by innovative methodology, experimentation in filmmaking and dramatic methods, and the ability to create performances that also transform the settings where they take place. Throughout thirty years of activity, they have created more than thirty shows, receiving prestigious awards such as the Sigillo d’Ateneo of the University of Urbino, six UBU Awards, the Premio Associazione Nazionale Critici di Teatro, the Premio Carmelo Bene assigned by the magazine Lo Straniero, the Premio Europa Taormina Arte, the Agis Biglietto d’oro special award.
