Event #7
Roberto Casati
Knowledge in the wind
How does a research community spending a number of days on a boat have to be organized? Aboard the cutter Kleronia, Roberto Casati sailed for a week between Rome, the Pontine Islands and Gaeta, travelling through different meteorological conditions with members of the Taqwim Association (Fabrizia de Gasparre, Fabio Rosciglione, Fabio Sebastiani and Maria Sebregondi), designer Simo Capecchi and videomaker Rocco Soldini. Four pilot projects were also housed aboard the vessel: Cognition in the wind, focusing on navigation strategies in non-adaptive environments; Disorientation Remediation, on defining scenarios leading to loss of orientation; haiku writing and drawing in hard conditions. Indeed, a vessel is a demanding and intense social microcosm, where every action has a meaning and a name, and every project is always a community project.
Roberto Casati is an Italian philosopher. He currently heads the Institut Jean Nicod, a laboratory at the École Normale Supérieure and one at the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales, in Paris. He writes essays both for a specialized and general public, and has taught at different European and American universities. His latest publications are Semplicemente diaboliche. 100 nuove storie filosofiche, with A. Varzi (Laterza, 2017) and La lezione del freddo (Einaudi, 2017). The project on board of the Kleronia was carried out within the framework of the Disorientation Remediation, Design: Cognitive Foundations and Cognition in the Wind research projects, in partnership with the Taqwim Association and Moleskine.
